UNC volleyball drops two 5-set matches at BYU Classic ...Saudi Arabia

Two more five-set matches for the University of Northern Colorado volleyball team this weekend in the Bears’ first road trip of the season.

UNC lost two consecutive five-set matches Thursday and Friday at the Brigham Young Classic in Provo, Utah.

The nationally ranked No. 18 host Cougars beat UNC 3-2 Thursday in BYU’s Nike Classic. The match was the first five-set match of the season for BYU, 4-0 through Thursday.

UNC lost to the University of Incarnate Word by the same score Friday. The BYU event features four teams over three days. UNC wraps up its schedule in Provo against Wichita State at 1 p.m. Saturday.

UNC (2-3) opened its season with five-set wins at home in two of its first three matches as of earlier this week. The Bears beat the University of Washington 3-2 on a reverse sweep in their season-opening match Aug. 29. UNC topped Colorado State by the same score at home Tuesday evening.

BYU outhit UNC with a better hitting percentage, .346 to .237. The Cougars had 65 kills total with Claire Little Chambers earning a match-high 20. Suli Davis added 17 kills with a .552 hitting percentage.

Junior Brynn Reines led UNC with a season-high 18 kills, junior setter Nerea Alvarez Jorge had a season-best 43 assists.

The match scores were 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-8. BYU opened the fifth set on a 6-1 run.

Incarnate Word won the first two sets, 25-21 and 27-25. UNC won the third and fourth sets 25-13 and 25-18. UIW wrapped the match with a 15-11 win in the fifth.

UNC had leads in the fifth of 3-1, 6-4 and 8-5, leading into a media timeout.

Out of the timeout, UIW won five-straight points for a 10-8 lead. UNC hitter Alayna Tessena tied the set 10-10 with a kill off an assist from Mia Liddiard. UIW won three in a row and five of the next six points to clinch the match.

The Bears had a better hitting percentage than UIW, .263 to .143. UNC had 14 service errors to only seven for UIW.

Tessena set a new season high with 23 kills. She had 21 in the Bears’ win over Washington. Liddiard had a season-high 53 assists. She had 52 assists against Washington. Liddiard is a senior from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City.
