Tremaine Edmunds is Ready For What Might Be His Most Important Season With the Bears ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

With so much excitement surrounding how the new-look Chicago Bears offense will look in 2025, it is easy to lose sight of what will happen on the defensive side of the ball. But don’t get it twisted. I still care about what happens on “D,” especially when it comes to star players like Tremaine Edmunds. A free-agent signing in 2023, Edmunds enters his third season in Chicago with a lot on his plate.

And for what it’s worth, it sounds like Edmunds is ready to shine in 2025, starting with the team’s Week 1 showdown on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings.

“Anytime you can play prime time…that’s what you play this game for,” Edmunds said, via Bears Wire. “You want the whole world to see all the hard work you put into it individually and as a team. We’ve been working hard to be able to display our talents. What other way, would you want to have it? Opening up a season on Monday night in front of the whole world against a divisional opponent. This is what you work your tail off for, to be in these moments, to be in these games.”

Prime-time games for the Bears have been hit-and-miss during Tremaine Edmunds’ time with the Bears. Wins against the Washington Commanders (TNF, 2023), Carolina Panthers (TNF, 2023), and Minnesota Vikings (MNF, 2023) were enjoyable. However, losses against the Los Angeles Chargers (SNF, 2023), Houston Texans (SNF, 2024), Vikings (MNF, 2024), and Seattle Seahawks (TNF, 2024) were miserable football-watching experiences. And I’m not even counting island games like the Week 18 finale in 2023 when the Bears essentially no-showed when given an opportunity to knock the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs. Nor am I including last year’s Thanksgiving debacle or Fail Mary in this discussion.

But maybe I should, if only to drive home how agonizing it has been to watch the Bears in their biggest games. I hope that Tremaine Edmunds and the rest of his teammates show up in a big way on Monday Night Football against the Vikings. Because if they don’t, we will be in for another long night with millions of sets of eyes watching us squirm in anguish.

Tremaine Edmunds has a lot riding on the 2025 NFL season

In March 2023, Chicago’s front office inked Tremaine Edmunds to a HUGE deal that paid him at the top of the market. The move surprised me at the time because the team was only months removed from trading away Roquan Smith, which seemed like an indication that this front office was not going to pay a premium price for an off-the-ball linebacker. Instead, the Bears pivoted to shell out a large load of cash to Edmunds. And while his production has been fine, “fine” feels underwhelming when more was expected after his addition in free agency. The Bears need more from Edmunds in 2025. Full stop.

This is such an important year for Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. The 27-year-old linebacker has a new head coach, is playing in a new scheme, operating within a new defensive coordinator, and working with a new position coach. Perhaps the clean slate that comes with a regime change will pay off for Edmunds in a major way. If it doesn’t, then we might be seeing the last of Edmunds in a Bears uniform.

The 2025 season represents Year 3 of the four-year contract Tremaine Edmunds signed in 2023. Should the Bears be ready to move on from Edmunds’ contract, they can do so next offseason without doing much harm to their salary cap situation. According to OverTheCap’s data, parting ways with Edmunds would create $15 million in cap space while taking on a dead cap hit of only $2.4357 million. Considering that the Bears are projected to be over next year’s projected cap according to OTC’s calculations, cutting ties might happen regardless of how Edmunds performs in 2025.

With that being said, that is all the more reason for Tremaine Edmunds to have a big year. Not only would it help the 2025 Bears toward their goal of making the playoffs, but it could also help set Edmunds up for another notable payday. This isn’t a contract year for Edmunds, but it might as well be.
