What started as a summer project for Kathy Silmon and her granddaughters has turned into a viral sensation that brought hundreds — even some from out of town — to a Chicago suburb — all carrying rocks.
The project began when Silmon and her granddaughters each painted a rock and placed them outside with a sign.
“Rocky the rock snake,” the sign read, encouraging people to “add a painted rock” and “see how long I can get.”
“We wanted to paint rocks, put them out and make a snake,” Silmon told NBC Chicago. “Just something to do. I saw it on a website and thought why not try it and see what happens.”
Little did they know “Rocky” was about to grow much larger.
Silmon said word started to spread about Rocky after her daughter made a post on Facebook.
“It exploded,” Silmon said. “We had one gentleman bring a real boa constrictor. My granddaughters took pictures with it.”
Residents from near and far began sharing photos of themselves with the rocks they added.
“My 3 year old grandson added to Rocky! I loved reading all the little messages on the rocks!” one commenter wrote. “What an uplifting and simple act of kindness!!! I hope many more will follow!”
The quiet, tree-lined block in suburban Bolingbrook is now home to more than 400 painted rocks, making “Rocky” nearly 100 feet long.
“We started out with three rocks that we painted, and now we are over 400. One has braces, there’s ice cream, the American flag, a tortoise. Everyone is so creative,” Silmon said.
Silmon said people from other states, the mayor of Bolingbrook and first responders are among those who have added painted rocks to Rocky.
“One gentleman, the other night, he came and rang the doorbell and asked if he could put a boulder and my husband said, ‘Sure.’ You don’t need permission, just paint a rock and bring it out here,” Silmon said.
Silmon said once winter arrives she plans to number all the rocks, put them in sealed bags, store them in the garage, and then bring them out next spring to continue spreading joy.
“I hope other communities consider doing this. It will bring your community together – I know it really has for us,” she said.
