There’s a quiet, tree-line block in suburban Bolingbrook that is home to a very special and very large snake, but fear not if you’re not a fan of the slithering creatures.
This snake’s name is Rocky, and he’s almost 100 feet long, and his body is made entirely of hundreds of painted rocks.
It all started as a little summer project for Kathy Silmon and her granddaughters. Months later, she says it has blossomed into an act of love for her community.
“We wanted to paint rocks, put them out and make a snake,” she said. “Just something to do. I saw it on a website and thought why not try it and see what happens. We started out with three rocks that we painted, and now we are over 400. One has braces, there’s ice cream, the American flag, a tortoise. Everyone is so creative.”
Kathy said word started to spread about Rocky after her daughter made a post on Facebook.
“It exploded,” she said. “We had one gentleman bring a real boa constrictor. My granddaughters took pictures with it.”
Kathy says people from other states, the mayor of Bolingbrook and first responders have added painted rocks to Rocky.
“One gentleman, the other night, he came and rang the doorbell and asked if he could put boulder and my husband said sure. You don’t need permission, just paint a rock and bring it out here.
Silmon says this is the plan for the winter: Number all the rocks, put them in sealed bags, store them in the garage, and then bring them out next spring and continue spreading joy.
“I hope other communities consider doing this. It will bring your community together – I know it really has for us,” she said.
