Chicago Bulls Reportedly Up Offer to Josh Giddey … But Will It Move the Needle? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls and Josh Giddey are running out of time.

With less than a month to go until training camps open up around the NBA, the two sides remain without a new contract. In fact, most reports throughout the summer months have underscored how far apart the Bulls and Giddey have been in discussions. The 22-year-old’s camp has seemingly held onto the hope that he can net a deal with a $30.0 million average annual value (AAV). Meanwhile, the Bulls have tried to use the dried-up free agency market to force Giddey into taking nearly $10.0 million less.

To be more specific, The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer reported last month that the Bulls made Giddey a four-year, $80.0 million offer when free agency opened up in June. He also shared that Chicago had been “anchored” to that AAV as negotiations have continued. As the reality of the 2025-26 season begins to set in, however, it sounds like the front office has finally felt some pressure to get a deal done.

Chicago Bulls Ready to Offer Josh Giddey More?

ESPN’s Bobby Marks provided an update on the restricted free agency market in a video shared to the company’s YouTube page. After discussing the ongoing situations with Jonathan Kuminga and Quentin Grimes, Marks shared that the Bulls have finally increased their offer to Giddey since free agency opened in June. Whether it’s by enough, however, is a fitting question.

“He was offered four years, $80.0 million before free agency started. That number has gone up to four years, $88.0 million,” Marks said. “That number is still in the bottom of starting point guards here. And, if you’re the Bulls who just committed five years, $90.0 million to Patrick Williams on a lesser body of work, now you’re all of a sudden drawing a line in the sand as far as where you are with Josh Giddey here.”

Marks went on to say that if the Bulls do not continue to push this sum higher, he would not be stunned to see Giddey join the Nets’ Cam Thomas in accepting the qualifying offer.

It’s not hard to see where Marks is coming from. If Giddey’s camp scoffed at a $20.0 million salary, it’s easy to understand why increasing it by $2.0 million a season would fail to move the needle. Although what if the Bulls shaved off a season? What if they let Giddey re-enter the market sooner with a three-year, $66.0 million deal? I have to imagine it would be slightly more enticing.

Nonetheless, I have an inkling this could be only the first update over the next few weeks regarding a revised offer from the Bulls. Ever since free agency tipped off, I’ve been adamant that a deal hovering around a $24-25.0 million AAV would be suitable. Meeting in the middle has long felt like the best solution, and perhaps this is our first sign of things trending in that direction.

Marks even said it himself, a four-year deal in the $100-110.0 million range would still feel like a borderline steal for Giddey. While he still has a lot to prove, the guard showed enough during the 2024-25 season to suggest that he can be an above-average starting point guard and viable building block moving forward. Think about it this way, PJ Washington just signed a four-year, $90.0 million deal to stay in Dallas. Is a still-developing Giddey worth less than that? I guarantee you his agents are rhetorically asking the Bulls that same question.

Likewise, Giddey would be wise to remind the Bulls of the cap space that looms in 2026. Ten teams could enter free agency with meaningful money to spend, giving Giddey that many more options as an unrestricted free agent. To be sure, none of this means Chicago should meet the guard’s full demands. The front office deserves some rare credit for playing hardball. However, reaching a multi-year agreement continues to make the most sense for everyone involved.
