Once again, Cade Horton was brilliant. The rookie right-hander held the Atlanta Braves hitless through five innings last night, looking completely dominant the entire time.
On 75 pitches, Horton went 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 BB, and 6 K. The Braves could do absolutely nothing except pray that Craig Counsell would take Cade Horton out early enough for them to put something together (which, unfortunately, is exactly what happened (but Counsell made the right big picture call)).
Horton is on a run we haven’t seen since – yes, I’m gonna say it, because it’s true – Jake Arrieta’s legendary second half in 2015 (as you’ll see in some forthcoming numbers). I’m not saying Horton is about to win the Cy Young and go down in history as having one of the best Cubs pitched seasons ever, since there was a lot more to Arrieta’s season than just a lot of scoreless innings in the second half. But the fact that we can even talk about the two situations in the same breath and not be overreacting speaks to how incredible Horton has been.

— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) September 4, 2025As for the decision to pull Horton after just five innings, the Cubs have to balance present success with the NEED to have a pitcher like Horton pitching THIS WELL in the playoffs if they want to make a real run. So it’s not really a difficult decision in my book.
