SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — The Spencerport Central School District is the latest district to get new technology that aims to keep students safe as they board the school bus.
The buses will have stop arm cameras, which take a photo of cars that pass by the bus while it’s stopped. Violators will get warning letters for 30 days. Ticketing starts Oct. 6 and that could mean a $250 fine for your first offense.
According to the state, an estimated 50,000 vehicles illegally pass school buses in New York every day. The Greece Central School District has also rolled out the cameras. The company BusPatrol says the system doesn’t cost taxpayers because it’s funded by fines.
The Rochester City School District is starting the same program this fall, after Rochester City Council voted unanimously to enter an agreement with BusPatrol.
