PENFIELD, N.Y. – It’s back-to-school time. Wednesday marks the first day of classes for students in several districts across the region, including Penfield, Greece, Fairport, Brockport, East Rochester, Hilton, Spencerport, Honeoye Falls-Lima, and Wheatland-Chili. You can see when your child’s district begins its first day here.

News10NBC TODAY will be live from a different school each day as school leaders and teachers get ready to welcome students. On Wednesday, News10NBC’s Kristi Blake shares how parents are feeling about school safety and other topics. She spoke to parents at the Aquinas Institute and Cobbles Elementary School in Penfield. You can livestream the show every morning through 7 a.m. here.

“I’m excited because she’s excited to go back to school,” said David Autovino, a Penfield parent. “We’ve got a lot of great new things in the school year. The district is providing all of her school supplies this year. The district is supplying breakfast and lunch, which is amazing. We love our administrators. We think it’s a wonderful district and we’re just really excited to get back to school.”

Megan Switzer, another Penfield parent, said, “I think just really the love for learning that he’s getting. He’s developing such an enthusiasm about school. So it’s nice to see that.”

Some of the parents said they moved to make sure their children were in the Penfield Central School District. When asked about their favorite class, three kids gave a variety of answers, including art, music, recess, and a confident “I don’t know.”

While parents are excited to get their kids back to the classroom to learn, their safety is also top of mind.

“We all just want our kids to have a safe place to go and enjoy their childhood and not have those fears and worries as part of their day-to-day school, which is not how it was for us,” Switzer said. “So I think, you know, it gives you a little bit of a heavy heart but at the same time, just we want to see joy in their hearts, not fear.”

Autovino added, “I mean, as a parent, you’re always worried about your kids safety but I think that we are a good community here. I think that this is a community of parents who are all invested in the safety and security of our children.”

It’s clear from listening to parents that they are doing their best to hope for a positive and safe school year. It’s a time for their children to get a good education and make new friends.
