Texas border patrol chief expected to lead increased immigration enforcement in Chicago ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

NBC 5 Investigates has learned that a Texas border patrol chief is expected to lead the impending increased immigration enforcement efforts in Chicago, which are set to begin this month, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office said.

Gregory Bovino, who most recently led immigration enforcement efforts in Los Angeles – which at times have devolved into violent clashes between authorities and protesters – has been tapped to lead the efforts in Illinois.

NBC 5 Investigates also learned that it was Bovino himself who contacted Illinois State Police to inform the agency of the potential operations, according to the governor’s office.

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Illinois State Police would not provide specifics about the conversation, only saying: “Consistent with normal law enforcement protocol, ISP continues to communicate with a variety of federal agencies, including border patrol, to ensure the safety of officers and the public. ISP operates within the requirements of the TRUST act and is not involved in immigration enforcement.”

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, President Trump would not say when the operations in Chicago might begin, only that: “We’re going in, I didn’t say when, we’re going in” later saying “Chicago is a hellhole right now.”

He later added that he would love for Pritzker to call him and admit that Chicago had a problem.

Those remarks drew a swift rebuke from Pritzker, who during a Tuesday afternoon news conference reiterated that he would not be calling Trump.

“I find this extraordinarily strange, as Chicago does not want troops on our streets,” Pritzker said, later referring to the efforts by the Trump administration as “a show.”

“If you need any proof of this – that it’s all a big show – well, look at who they are putting in charge. Gregory Bovino – the guy who desperately wants to be a reality TV star – he led the cruel adventures of ICE in Los Angeles, and he’s been sent here to do the very same thing,” the governor said.

On social media posts to sites like X, Bovino has posted edited videos underscored with music showing immigration enforcement agents running down people in the parking lot of a California Home Depot. In another video, he said that their efforts are to “secure the homeland for Ma and Pa America…”

In another that uses a clip from “Star Wars” and criticizes sanctuary cities, Bovino labeled a border patrol sector chief Darth Vader – who used a lightsaber fight off the rebels labeled “fentanyl,” “fake news” and “sanctuary cities.”

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson has not responded to NBC 5 Investigates’ emails requesting comment.
