Our wait for the start of the NFL regular season is almost over. The Chicago Bears won’t play until Monday, but at least we get games on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday to hold us over. In the meantime, we can spend some time checking out the updated depth chart ahead of the Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

As for the next man up at left tackle, look no further than Theo Benedet. The Canadian Eagle was the late entry in the left tackle derby. And yet, he is second on the depth chart behind Jones after being the third-string right tackle upon the preseason release of the depth chart. Meanwhile, rookie Ozzy Trapilo — who was the second-string left tackle when the depth chart came out in August — slides in as the backup right tackle behind starter Darnell Wright. Kiran Amegadjie, who began the summer in competition with Trapilo for left tackle snaps, is listed as the backup to starting right guard Jonah Jackson. Amegadjie is a tackle by trade and was listed as the backup right tackle behind Darnell Wright during the preseason. Seeing Jahdae Walker go from undrafted rookie on the last line of the expanded preseason depth chart to someone who is on the 53-man roster reminds me of how much I love following underdog stories. I don’t know how much Walker we will see in 2026, but I respect the grind. The Bears’ preseason depth chart listed five “starting” defensive linemen, which I thought was an interesting way for Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen to line things up. This update has a traditional four-down linemen, with Andrew Billings moving from being a starter to moving in as Gervon Dexter Sr.’s backup.MONTEZ SWEAT LOVES BEN JOHNSON’S COACHING STYLE
Tyrique Stevenson remains the top cornerback opposite of starter Jaylon Johnson. Meanwhile, Nahshon Wright is second on the depth chart behind Johnson. Does this mean that Wright will be the starter if CB1 can’t give it a go on Monday Night Football? Or would that honor go to Jaylon Jones, who returned to the Bears on a waiver claim and is listed as Stevenson’s backup. Notable movement at the nickel cornerback position, where Nick McCloud moved into the second-string spot behind starter Kyler Gordon. Josh Blackwell, who entered the summer as the backup, goes to third-string. I wonder if the Bears would use Gordon as a boundary corner (again) in the event Jaylon Johnson can’t play. ICYMI: Bears safety Kevin Byard III and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett were named team captains on Tuesday. It is the second consecutive season in which Byard has been voted to be a captain. As for Jarrett, he gets captain status in his first year with the team. That is pretty neat.
