An aid convoy entered Suwayda province (southern Syria) on Tuesday, September 2, via the Damascus–Suwayda road, accompanied by a United Nations delegation and overseen by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that this was the third convoy to arrive through the Damascus–Suwayda route. It carried 22 truckloads of food and flour, along with six fuel tankers.
The correspondent noted that no security incidents have been recorded on the road since its reopening by the Interior Ministry on August 27.
The ministry announced it had completed the steps to secure the Damascus–Suwayda route, preparing to reopen it for transport and trade after its closure in mid-July amid clashes.
In a statement, the ministry said it remains committed to meeting the needs of Suwayda’s residents, ensuring their mobility, and overcoming the crisis’s effects. It added that it was working to finalize all necessary measures to keep the road safe for residents and trade, describing this as part of its “national responsibility to preserve security and stability across Syria.”
The road had been closed since July 12, when fighting broke out between government forces and allied tribal fighters on one side and local factions in Suwayda on the other.
Security situation in Suwayda
On Monday evening, September 1, local factions in Suwayda clashed with government internal security forces in the village of al-Majdal, northwest of Suwayda, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent.
The area was reported calm as of publication time, with no renewed clashes.
No new evacuations of civilians from Suwayda have taken place since August 31, the correspondent added.
The Syrian Civil Defense reported that 93 families left Suwayda individually through the Bosra al-Sham humanitarian crossing on August 30 and 31. The evacuations included 369 people, among them women and children. Civil Defense teams assisted the families and helped ensure their safe arrival at destinations of their choice.
According to the Civil Defense, 35 families comprising 138 people also returned to Suwayda through the Bosra al-Sham crossing.
Humanitarian crossings
The Damascus–Suwayda road has now joined the list of humanitarian routes used by aid convoys, alongside the Bosra al-Harir and Bosra al-Sham crossings.
The Bosra al-Sham crossing has seen repeated incidents, most recently on August 17, when four people were wounded in an attack on a civilian vehicle near the town of Kahil in eastern Daraa, as it traveled from Suwayda to Damascus. A bus passing along the same route was also struck, injuring its driver.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa said unknown assailants carried out the attack, which wounded three civilians including children, along with the bus driver. All were transferred to hospitals in Damascus.
The attack occurred despite a General Security checkpoint located three kilometers away, highlighting the difficulty of securing the long route with only one checkpoint at the intersection in the town of al-Musayfrah.
On August 15, a woman was killed when her vehicle came under fire in the same area while heading from Suwayda to Damascus, though no other passengers were injured.
On August 13, an aid convoy traveling from Jaramana to Suwayda was attacked in eastern Daraa, and several aid workers were abducted, including Abed Abu Fakhr, Fidaa Azzam, Yamen Mamdouh al-Sahnawi, and Radwan Zaid al-Sahnawi.
Another Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy was attacked on August 8, prompting the organization to issue a condemnation statement without disclosing details of the location.
