Orlando Bloom struggled with the dramatic physical change he underwent for his latest role.
The actor shed a huge amount of weight for his boxing debut, playing the role of the boxer in upcoming film, The Cut.
Republic Pictures/ParamountBloom plays an unnamed boxer in his latest flick[/caption]The Brit, best known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, follows in the footsteps of other illustrious names who have gloved up for the big screen like Mark Wahlberg who played Micky Ward and Sylvester Stallone as Rocky.
Recently, Jake Gyllenhaal was involved in the remake of the 1989 film, Road House, playing UFC fighter Elwood Dalton and reportedly put on 13kg of muscle with an intense work-out routine.
Bloom, though, went the other way, as he recalled to talkSPORT about dropping around 30lbs in just three months to play the boxer.
“The fight in our movie is sort of quite an intense psychic battle for this boxer who just will do anything for a second chance,” he told Drive host Andy Goldstein.
“To come out of retirement and drop an insane amount of weight in order to get a shot at the title, and it was really hard.
“I actually lived through and went through what the boxer, does.”
The 48-year-old scaled in at 152lbs after following a heavily restricted diet.
Doing so enabled him to gain a better understanding of the dangers boxers often face outside of the ring, like dehydration.
While dehydration is a common complication boxers experience when cutting weight both before and after fights, it can cause real harm.
For example, Chris Eubank Jr was embroiled in controversy when he used a sauna suit in order to drop the pounds ahead of the official weigh-in for his grudge match with Conor Benn.
Eubank Jr was hospitalised due to dehydration after his win against BennGetty Eubank tried desperately to cut weight before fighting Benn and fans became concerned when they saw footage of the boxerEubank was handed a hefty $500,000 fine when he weighed in over the contracted limit twice.
What did Orlando Bloom do in preparation for The Cut?
The British heart-throb had to pay extreme attention to what he was eating as he geared up for his character’s fight night.
He explained the precautions he took: “I worked with nutritionist [Philip Goglia] who worked with Christian Bale and I wouldn’t recommend doing this at home but he was doing blood work.
“Just testing my blood and then he tiered me down from like three meals a day, to two, to finally one.
“I was training throughout that. So it was like an hour/an hourof boxing training every morning, treadmill for 45 minutes, weights, treadmill at the end of the day, and then just loads of little meals.
“What I actually ate was cucumber and tuna, because cucumber’s a bit like a diuretic with the cucumber, but you have to have the protein intake. So it was a lot of tuna and cucumber.”

In the scenes when he was at his lowest weight, his character is desperate to return to winning ways.
“It’s basically the only way to do it.
“I was literally lying on the floor between takes, sort of get up and try and do a few press-ups, so I looked a little bit more buff for those moments, so there’s more blood in my muscles and stuff.”
What did Bloom struggle with the most during this process?
As well as the physical toll on his body, Bloom had to overcome the mental challenges that came with dropping weight.
“The whole point was to just do a total sort of transformation, and actually the truth is when you do restrict the calories, and when you do do these things, I mean, my head space [was the most intense]
Bloom discussed his upcoming film on talkSPORT“More than anything it’s really an intense psychological drama, as well as it is a sports movie, because of what [cutting] does to your head.
“The paranoia, the anger, the hunger, and the feelings of discombobulation are really real. In the last two days, I wasn’t even really drinking water, because I just wanted to have that really dry, weird look.”
Boxers project a tough exterior but The Cut set out to unpack the dark reality behind their art.
Bloom highlighted: “It’s also a commentary on body dysmorphia. [My character is] a guy who has obviously struggled with weight stuff, I think there are plenty fighters do, and then they have to cut weight to get into the ring.
“They can be great fighters, but then they’ve got to cut the weight, and that can be the biggest battle battle, and for many fighters, it is.
“That’s something that we wanted to show in a fresh take.”
The Cut is in cinemas from September 5
