Munif Mithqal al-Qaddah, a former commander in the Ahrar al-Sham Movement in Daraa (southern Syria), known as “Munif al-Za’eem,” survived an assassination attempt on Monday, September 1, the first of its kind in the city since the fall of ousted president Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that al-Za’eem, a member of the Public Relations Committee of the “Abshiri Houran” humanitarian campaign, was shot in the head and spine. He was transferred to the National Hospital in Daraa and later to al-Mujtahid Hospital in Damascus, where he remains in critical condition.
Al-Qaddah, originally from the city of al-Hirak in Daraa province, was one of the most prominent figures of the Syrian uprising since 2011. He became known as a media activist covering events in the province for Arab and international outlets.
After 2018, he left for Jordan but returned to Daraa following the fall of the regime in late 2024, where he engaged in civilian activities as part of the humanitarian campaign.
No party has claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of writing.
Who is “al-Za’eem”?
Munif Mithqal al-Qaddah, known by his nickname “Munif al-Za’eem” or “Abu Muhammad al-Hourani,” is among the notable names tied to the early stages of the uprising in Daraa province.
Born in al-Hirak in 1972, he graduated in 1993 from the Intermediate Health Institute with a degree in pharmacy technology. He began his career at the Pharmacists’ Syndicate pharmacy before moving to the National Hospital in al-Hirak, where he worked in the central pharmacy and supervised attendance records.
Alongside his medical career, al-Qaddah also served as president of al-Hirak Sports Club, a social position that boosted his visibility in his hometown.
He comes from a family marked by political and social diversity. His father was known as a local political and social figure, while his brother Riyad opposed the Assad regime since the 1980s and was forced into exile. Other relatives held influential positions within the Baath Party, including Suleiman Qaddah, who served as assistant regional secretary of the party.
Despite these contradictions, Munif embraced the uprising early on, choosing to call himself “al-Za’eem,” later becoming one of the leading media voices from Daraa.
At the onset of protests in March 2011, he witnessed the first deaths outside the Omari Mosque and quickly became a bridge between the grassroots movement and Arab and international media. He appeared on Al Jazeera, France 24, Orient, Sawt al-Arab, and other outlets, speaking on behalf of local coordination committees and contributing to documenting violations and organizing demonstrations.
In addition to his media work, al-Za’eem played a humanitarian role by securing medical supplies from al-Hirak Hospital and transferring them to Daraa city. This was his first contribution to assisting the wounded, many of whom feared arrest or execution inside regime-run hospitals.
