For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

San Diego native Darmen Yessengeldy has announced his verbal commitment to the University of California, San Diego, for the 2026-27 school year and beyond. He will overlap two years with his older brother, Bekzhan Yessengeldy, who is a member of the Tritons’ swimming and diving class of 2028.

“I am beyond honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic journey as a D1 swimmer at the University of California, San Diego! This accomplishment is the result of a long, fulfilling journey, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported me along the way. To my parents, my brother, and all my incredible teammates and coaches from NCA, CSTE, and RSD — thank you for shaping me into the person I am today. I owe special thanks to Coach Joe and Coach Brandon for pushing me to reach new heights, and to Coach Marko and Coach Cassie for believing in me and entrusting me with this opportunity. Go Tritons!!! ”

Yessengeldy will be a senior at Canyon Crest Academy this fall. He won the 100 back (48.44) and was runner-up in the 100 fly (49.06) at the 2025 CIF San Diego Section Division I Championships, picking up PBs in the 100 back and 100 free (47.35) leading off the CCA relay. He then went on to the California State Meet and placed 5th in the backstroke.

Swimming with the club team Rancho San Dieguito, Yessengeldy had a strong showing at Oceanside Sectionals in February, placing 4th in the 100 back, 4th in the 200 back, and 11th in the 100 fly and clocking PBs in the 50 back (22.88) and 100 fly (49.04). This summer, he won the 100 back (59.10) and 200 back (2:08.07) at Novato Sectionals and scored PBs in the LCM 50 free (25.95), 100 free (55.32), and 200 back (2:08.07). He wrapped up his long course season at Summer Junior Nationals with PBs in the 50 back (27.44), 100 back (58.38), and 200 IM (2:09.96).

Best SCY times:

100 back – 48.44 200 back – 1:48.09 100 fly – 49.04 200 IM – 1:51.79

UCSD finished 4th out of 5 teams in the men’s meet at the 2025 Big West Conference Championships. Yessengeldy would have added to the Tritons’ tally with an ‘A’ final appearance in the 100 back and a ‘B’ final appearance in the 200 back.
