The California Highway Patrol will be out in force in the San Diego area over Labor Day weekend, the agency said Tuesday.

The CHP’s statewide “maximum enforcement” effort for the late-summer holiday will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and continue through 11:59 p.m. Monday, as it does each year.

“Every available CHP officer will be on the road this Labor Day weekend with one mission — to stop impaired drivers before they harm themselves or others,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. “If you choose to drive under the influence, expect to be stopped, arrested and held accountable. No excuses, no warnings. Lives are on the line.”

Over the past five years, according to the CHP, there have been an average of 1,000 DUI arrests and more than two dozen fatal crashes statewide during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Last year, 21 roadway deaths were linked to inebriated driving, and CHP officers made 1,140 DUI arrests over the period.

Officials urge the public to report any suspected DUI drivers they see on freeways and local streets.
