The SEC announced on Aug. 21 that it will play a 9-game conference schedule starting in 2026, and fans are left wondering how that will change SEC schools’ scheduling philosophies.
The Texas Longhorns have games scheduled against Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame on the books for the next four years. These are massive games for the Longhorns and college football fans, and with the SEC expanding its conference schedule, it raises questions over whether teams like Texas will continue to schedule these types of games.
Texas AD Chris Del Conte put all of that to bed when he said that Texas will continue to schedule these tougher non-conference games in the future.
“The brand of Texas, we owe it to college football to play this type of game…These games really set the tone for college,” Del Conte said this week. “We’re not shying away from it. We want to preserve college football in the national landscape.”

— Danny Davis (@_dannydavis) August 28, 2025Del Conte goes on to say that Texas not playing Texas A&M for a while hurt college football and that other matchups like Nebraska and Oklahoma not playing make “no sense” to him.
“We’ve got to have those games, they’re important. Us playing Ohio State, everyone’s talking about it,” Del Conte said. “I’m fired up for the game.”
Texas will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Buckeyes in a No. 1 versus No. 3 matchup on Aug. 30 at 12 p.m. ET.
