The month of August is rolling along and we’re now just a few short days from September, which means all of the Earth, Wind & Fire references are coming — and so is NHL hockey!

With prospect showcases and training camps just weeks away, there’s more news popping up around the league. So let’s take a quick lap around the NHL this week to supplement our morning news and notes. Here are some noteworthy updates from the week around the NHL:

Connor McDavid spoke to the media on Wednesday at Canada’s Olympics Orientation Camp, and his contract situation came up. He’s set to his unrestricted free agency next summer, but it certainly sounds like he isn’t going anywhere. McDavid did say he’ll take his time with the contract negotiations, however. Elliotte Friedman wrote his thoughts on the subject for Sportsnet. Here’s what McDavid had to say on the subject yesterday:

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) August 27, 2025 While speaking to the media at the USA Men’s Olympics Orientation Camp on Wednesday, team general manager Bill Guerin said he expects Matthew Tkachuk to be available for the Olympics. Staying at the USA camp, Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy told reporters he feels “great” and is ready to go for the new season. He was injured at the 4 Nations Face-Off and had work done on his shoulder because of an infection, ending his regular season. David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported Wednesday that the shakeups at the top of the Florida Panthers continue. Matt Caldwell, who was the President and CEO, has left the club to become the CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx. Florida had already moved on from COO Bryce Hollweg and CRO Shawn Thornton. The Carolina Hurricanes announced they have signed forward Ivan Ryabkin to a three-year, entry-level contract. Ryabkin was a polarizing prospect entering the 2025 NHL Draft; he was ultimately selected 62nd overall. He spent half of last year with Blackhawks prospect Václav Nestrašil playing for Muskegon in the USHL. Earlier this week the San Jose Sharks and the City of San Jose announced they will jointly invest more than $500M in the SAP Center, keeping the Sharks in the city through the 2050-51 season.
