California State University, Los Angeles is one of 12 universities nationwide selected for the “Battery Workforce Challenge,” a joint project sponsored by the United States Department of Energy and Stellantis, the multinational car brand company, and managed by Argonne National Laboratory.
On Wednesday, the student engineering team — nicknamed the “Charging Eagles” after the state university’s “Golden Eagles” mascot — demonstrated its student-designed electric vehicle battery pack for use in a Ram ProMaster electric vehicle.

Kelley, Press-Telegram/SCNG) ExpandStellantis designs and manufactures 14 car brands including Alfa Romeo, Citroën, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot and the commercial work van used for all 12 of the competition’s student teams, Ram Trucks.
The three-year competition is intended to give engineering students hands-on experience in designing, testing, and integrating advanced EV battery systems into the Ram ProMaster electric vehicle.
The CSULA team, with more than 50 student engineers, has earned national recognition with the Spirit of the Challenge Award and the Thermal Cooling Synergy Award, according to a press release.
The morning event also included representatives from the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the engineering students for a photo shoot with a symbolic check presentation recognizing the $150,000 grant in support of the team’s project and student success by the South Coast AQMD ( www.aqmd.gov/aq-spec/aboutscaqmd).
