CUBS LINEUP — Well, I was flat-out wrong on Matthew Boyd yesterday! I knew Justin Verlander could be trouble, but I really thought Boyd was set up for success against that lineup, which had struggled so mightily with left-handed pitching all season, and especially lately. Alas. I will make no such pronouncements tonight.
Except for the fact that the Cubs are definitely going to light up Giants lefty Carson Whisenhunt. Total shellacking coming in. You heard it hear first.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Nico Hoerner, 2B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Justin Turner, 1B Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3B Willi Castro, LFIt’s the smallest of samples at the big league level, but the Giants lefty, Whisenhunt, has significant lefty/righty splits so far this season.
Righties: .295/.415/.659 (.449 wOBA) with a 13.2 K% Lefties: .154/.185/.308 (.214 wOBA) with a 22.2 K%.So with that in mind, you should not be surprised to see Michael Busch getting a much-needed day of rest, not only from the leadoff spot, but from the Cubs lineup altogether. Nico Hoerner takes the job at the top of the order, and Justin Turner comes in to play first base, batting fourth.
Meanwhile, Ian Happ is also out of the lineup entirely, replaced by fellow switch-hitter, Willi Castro, who is batting ninth, moving Matt Shaw up a spot.
And finally, Carson Kelly is the man behind the plate, setting up the left-handed Reese McGuire to catch for tomorrow’s afternoon finale.
San Francisco Giants Lineup:
Heliot Ramos, LF Rafael Devers, DH Willy Adames, SS Dominic Smith, 1B Matt Chapman, 3B Casey Schmitt, 2B Jung Hoo Lee, CF Luis Matos, RF Andrew Knizer, CPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP
Colin Rea had a little stumble in his two starts just before the trade deadline (9ER in 9.0 IP against the Royals and Brewers), but has been pretty good over his four starts since: 6ER, 21.1 IP, 14H, 18K, 10BBs.
Rea is up to 22 starts on the year and is carrying a 3.96 ERA over 127.1 IP. The Cubs really culdn’t have asked for much more to this point, but with Jameson Taillon’s uncertain immediate future, they will need him to continue turning in solid efforts at the back of the rotation.
Unfortunately for him, the Giants are better than average against RHP (102 wRC+) for the season. However, they have been a great deal cooler at home, versus right-handed pitching, in the second half of the season (85 wRC+). Did I add too many caveats to that to make you feel better? Oops.
San Francisco Giants: Carson Whisenhunt, LHP
Carson Whisenhunt has made just four starts at the big league level, and although none of have been particularly bad, none have been very good, either. Especially in terms of length:
vsPIT: 5.0 IP, 5H, 4ER, 2BB, 3K@NYM: 5.1 IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 4KvsWSN: 4.0 IP, 5H, 3ER, 3BB, 5K@MIL: 4.0 IP, 4H, 2ER, 2BB, 1K
As you can see, there’s not a ton of damage there, but it’s still 10ER in just 18.1 IP. And with nine walks and FIVE homers allowed, you can understand why his 6.89 FIP is in “not-playable” range.
For what it’s worth, Whisenhunt has a 4.37 ERA over 19 starts at the Triple-A level this season, during which he allowed 13 homers in 19 starts.
