They would go on to stomp Louisville in the Final Four before facing a crushing 75-70 deficit to UNC in the title game.
While college basketball fans have seen many special teams over the past 25 years, few were as well-rounded and entertaining as this Illini squad. And that’s why this weekend in Champaign, Illinois, is about to be quite the celebration.
The 2004-05 Fighting Illini Will Reunite
According to Jeremy Werner of Illini Inquirer, Illinois will welcome back the 2004-05 men’s basketball team this upcoming weekend for a 20-year reunion.
Dee Brown, Deron Williams, Luther Head, Roger Powell, and Jame Augustine – aka the entire starting five – are set to attend. A handful of other teammates will also show up, as well as multiple staff members. This will even include former head coach Bruce Weber, who most recently served as the head coach of Kansas State.
As of now, it’s unclear exactly what the school has planned for the 20th anniversary, but WCIA’s Glenn Kinley seemed to suggest that they will be recognized at Illinois football’s season opener. The game is set for Friday night against Western Illinois. One has to imagine that more formal plans will be out soon. If one thing is for sure, simply having the full starting five back on campus will create quite the buzz around town.
