Daily News Week 1 football preview, Thursday’s games ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

It’s a heavy dose of L.A. City Section football games Thursday due to the upcoming holiday weekend. Here are the top matchups to keep an eye on:

Kennedy (1-0) at San Pedro (0-1)

This game serves as an opportunity for Kennedy. If the Cougars can compete with San Pedro physically — maybe — it means they’re capable of being an Open Division playoff team. The skill is there with QB Diego Montes leading the way, who scored seven touchdowns in last week’s 59-56 win over Eagle Rock.

Montes could be the best player in the City … that always gives you a chance.

Tarek’s pick: San Pedro. Until Kennedy shows it can take down an upper-echelon City program, especially one from the Marine League, it’s hard to pick the Cougars.

Arleta (1-0) at Cleveland (0-1)

Arleta showed good balance in a Week 0 win over Westchester. QB Austin Ramos passed for 126 yards and ran for 41 — but he did throw three interceptions. Running back Jose Rosas ran for 82 yards and two scores.

Cleveland on the other hand, took its lumps against Harvard-Westlake, a Southern Section school. Despite the loss, the Cavs probably improved more than Arleta from its Week 0 game.

Tarek’s pick: Cleveland

Monroe (1-0) at Taft (1-0)

Taft started the year with a 20-17 win over Nordhoff last week thanks to Nathan Swinson’s 255 yards and three touchdowns passes. Wideout Erik Koron had 10 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Toreadors have a chance to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2015.

Monroe defeated Chatsworth 25-24 in its opener.

Tarek’s pick: Taft

Palisades (0-0) at Harvard-Westlake (1-0)

Harvard-Westlake blanked Cleveland 21-0 in Dameon Porter’s coaching debut. When asked if there were any standout performances, Porter just said, “It was a solid team effort.”

Palisades will play its first football game since the Palisades Fire. The Dolphins will be playing their home games at Santa Monica City College this year, and are talented with QB Jack Thomas and speedy wideout Demare Dezeurn. This game will be a good litmus test for both teams.

Tarek’s pick: Palisades. I picked against HW last week and the Wolverines proved me wrong. Let’s see if they can do it again.

Monrovia (1-0) at Eagle Rock (0-1)

How will Eagle Rock bounce back? The Eagles lost a barn-burner to Kennedy (59-56) despite eight touchdowns from QB Liam Pasten (seven throwing, one running). It’s a tough game. Monrovia beat Brentwood 42-38. QB Jesse Saucedo threw for 485 yards and five touchdowns.

First one to 60 wins.

Tarek’s pick: Monrovia
