A popular brand of raw cat and dog food sold in several states, including Illinois, is being recalled after it was found to be potentially contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria, according to a release from the Food and Drug Administration.
The voluntary recall, from Viva Raw, impacts two lots of dog and cat food containing six different varieties, the release said. The first lot contained Viva Ground Beef for Dogs and Viva Beef and Turkey for Puppies, the FDA said, and the second contained Viva Ground Chicken for Dogs; Viva Chunked Chicken for Dogs; Viva Chicken for Cats; and Viva Pure Chicken.
The product is distributed as frozen 1 lb. bricks in clear vacuum packaging and the lot number is printed on the top of the packaging, the FDA said. Below are photos of the impacted products:
According to officials, the lots were distributed between July 2 and Aug. 21 directly to consumers nationwide, and to a small number of select retailers in New York, Illinois, South Carolina, Florida, Kansas, California and Arizona.
The products were found to be potentially contaminated after routine testing by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, the announcement said. Only lot numbers 21495 and 21975 were impacted, the FDA said.
Anyone who has those lots are asked to contact Viva Raw for a refund, officials said.
“You should then dispose of the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access,” the release said. “Do not sell or donate the recalled products. Do not feed the recalled product to pets or any other animals. Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers. Always ensure you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.”
Pets with Salmonella or Listeria infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, according to health officials.
“Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain,” the FDA said. “Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
A letter to customers posted to Viva Raw said it informed potentially impacted customers via email of the recall. To date, no illness were reported as part of the recall, the company said.
The letter goes on to say that it samples every few minutes from the production lines before testing by other agencies so that the company has a “high degree of confidence in our test results for every lot.”
“Given the sample results from NCDA, we have launched a thorough investigation into our product testing, sanitation procedures & pathogen intervention, and will be exploring additional technologies to see where we can add more safeguards,” Viva Raw Food said.
According to its website, the products are sold through the Viva Raw website directly.
In the Chicago area, they are also sold at Wild Miles in suburban Lake Forest, the website showed.
