Saturday’s top 3 clash between the Texas Longhorns and the Ohio State Buckeyes will mark the official start of the Arch Manning QB1 era in Austin, and the hype leading up to that moment has been pretty unreal, to say the least.
Manning has been the most talked about player in the sport before he ever made a decision on where he’d be spending his college career, and now he’ll finally be taking the reins in Steve Sarkisian’s high-octane offense.
While most people view Manning as a Heisman Trophy hopeful or a future No. 1 overall draft selection, there are some who remain skeptical about just how good he actually is, given the small sample size he has produced thus far.
One of these skeptics is SEC Network analyst Jordan Rogers, who appeared on ESPN’s Get Up on Wednesday morning and discussed how he doesn’t believe the hype surrounding Arch matches what he’s seen the QB produce on tape so far.
“The hype doesn’t match the tape,” Rogers said. “There are good things, and there are some good things. But the tape to me doesn’t say you’ve got a top 10 draft pick, or a first round draft pick, or a Heisman hopeful. I think he’s going to go into Ohio State, and he’s gonna struggle.”
Rogers may be cooking up a hot take here, but it’s hard to argue with the underlying logic. Until Manning shows he can be the number one guy week in and week out for Texas, there’s no real way of telling how good he actually is.
The talent is undoubtedly there, but now he’s got to prove he can put it all together over the course of the season.
