The Cubs‘ minor league squads kicked off their series on Tuesday, and things didn’t necessarily go great. Knoxville picked up a nice win, but elsewhere, the offense wasn’t pretty in three losses for the teams. On the bright side, Jefferson Rojas had a much-needed solid day at the plate. On the downside, well, there wasn’t really much else to write home about. Let’s get to it.
Cubs Prospects Report | August 25, 2025
Triple-A Iowa Cubs
Things started out ok for Iowa to open their series-opening game against Las Vegas, but after three scoreless innings, the wheels came off. With the game tied 0-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Aviators put up a seven-run frame to break the game wide open. Antonio Santos gave up five runs, then Tom Cosgrove gave up two more. With the score at 7-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Aviators tacked on three more runs off Tyson Miller to extend the lead to 10-0, which is how this one ended.
The Iowa offense managed six hits on the day, but the top five hitters in the order went just a combined 2-19 in the loss.
Notable Performances
Nicky Lopez | 2-4 Ben Cowles | 1-4, 2B Kevin Alcántara | 1-4FINAL: Aviators 10, Cubs 0 | Box Score
Double-A Knoxville Smokies
Let’s get to the bright spot of the day in the Cubs’ minor league system. Knoxville picked up a 6-2 win in its series opener against the Birmingham Barons. Pablo Aliendo got the Smokies on the board in the top of the second with a three-run blast. Then, with a 3-2 lead in the fourth, Andy Garriola went deep to make it a 5-2 ballgame. In the fifth, Pedro Ramirez scored Jefferson Rojas on an RBI single to make it 6-2.
One of the bigger takeaways of the day was Rojas’ solid performance at the plate. The highly regarded Cubs prospect has had a rough go of it since getting the call-up to Knoxville, hitting below .160 prior to Tuesday’s game. So, a 2-5 performance in a solid win has to feel good.
Notable Performances
Pablo Aliendo | 1-3, HR, 3 RBI Andy Garriola | 3-4, HR, 2 RBI Jefferson Rojas | 2-5, R, SBFINAL: Smokies 6, Barons 2 | Box Score
High-A South Bend Cubs
Peoria got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over South Bend, then added two more in the fourth to improve its lead to 3-0. Dawson Netz started for the Cubs on the mound, and while he might not have had his best stuff, allowing eight hits over 5.2 innings, he battled and kept the Cubs in it. In the seventh, the Cubs finally got on the board with an Alexis Hernandez solo home run, but unfortunately, that was all the offense they could muster.
This game really broke open in the bottom of the eighth. With the score still 3-1 in favor of the Chiefs, Peoria broke the game wide open with a nine-run frame off Kenyi Perez and Marino Santy. 12-1 is how this one would end.
Notable Performances
Alexis Hernandez | 1-2, HR, 2 BB Christian Hernandez | 1-2, 2 BB, 2 SB Cam Sisneros | 1-4FINAL: Chiefs 12, Cubs 1 | Box Score
Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Unfortunately, the limited offense theme held true for the Pelicans on Tuesday, too. On the bright side, they did get a great combined pitching performance from Alfredo Romero and Landon Ginn. Those two combined to toss eight innings with just one run allowed. They only surrendered three hits on the day, and combined for 11 strikeouts to just three walks.
Usually, that’s a good enough pitching effort to win, but not on this night. Fayetteville picked up a run on a solo shot in the fifth, and that held up as the only run of the ballgame. The Pelicans had runners in scoring position in the sixth and eighth, but ultimately couldn’t bring them home and fell 1-0.
Notable Performances
Alfredo Romero | 5.0 IP, 3 H, ER, 6 K, 2 BB Landon Ginn | 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 K, BB Ty Southisene | 2-4, 2 SBFINAL: Woodpeckers 1, Pelicans 0 | Box Score
