ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Students return to Rochester Prep as the new school year begins. Principal Keana Courtois returned to the school with not only the new title, but with her son starting kindergarten.
“I think that having this lens as a parent has also helped me as a principal to see, you know, on the parent side, what it takes for our students and really think about that as we push into classrooms.”
Courtois emphasized the importance of providing students with every opportunity to succeed. “I think about, growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher,” said Courtois. She highlighted her dedication to opening doors and pathways for students to ensure their success in college and beyond.
“Our mission is to give our students a world-class education and to do whatever it takes to get them there,” Courtois said. She noted that the high school graduates of the class of 2025 earned more than $1 million in scholarships, highlighting the school’s role in setting students up for success.
“Being a principal, I really think about the impact that I can have on the city of Rochester and really for the Black and Brown students in Rochester,” Courtois said
Courtois returns to Rochester prep as an educator, but an alumni.
“I moved to Rochester at the age of two, was a part of the founding class of Rochester Prep in 2006 when we opened,” Courtois said.
Courtois always aspired to be a teacher. After college, she returned to Rochester Prep and quickly set her sights on leadership roles.
She is committed to being actively involved in the school community, often found in hallways and classrooms rather than her office. Courtois aims to bring back the joy of learning she experienced as a student, ensuring students feel excitement when they enter classrooms.
