Ben Johnson Speaks: Left Tackle Competition Update, What’s New With Jaylon Johnson, More ...Middle East

Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson spoke to the media at Halas Hall on Tuesday ahead of the NFL’s 3 p.m. CT Tuesday deadline to trim rosters to 53 players. Let’s get to some highlights.

Ben Johnson shares the latest on the left tackle competition

When given an opportunity to name a starter at left tackle, the first-year Bears head coach declined to do so. Instead, he said this:

This is the answer Ben Johnson gave when asked about his starting left tackle. While most signs point to it being Braxton Jones, I still don’t think we can completely rule out that the starter isn’t in the building yet. pic.twitter.com/vI7HfHP5kb

“I’m not ready to talk about starters yet,” Ben Johnson said, in what is the best non-answer answer you’ll get regarding a situation as important as the showdown to start at left tackle.

Johnson would go on to say the following:

“We feel good about the guys we have in that room. Somebody is going to take the bull by the horns and take over. But we’re not afraid to make a change if the performance isn’t where it needs to be. We’ll make that decision going into next week. I’m sure you guys will have a good idea of who our starters will be going into Minnesota. Mentally, I’m not there yet.”

Braxton Jones has been the most consistent performer at that position this summer and has three years of starting experience on his résumé. So, at this point, it would truly be surprising if Jones wasn’t in the starting lineup at left tackle when the Bears kicked things off in Week 1. But I hate that I can’t shake the feeling that he is winning the job in a way that looks like he is triumphant by default. I want to feel better about this situation, but I can’t bring myself to that point. Jones playing well in the regular season would put some of my issues to bed.

TRACKING ROSTER MOVES ON BEN JOHNSON’S FIRST CUTDOWN DAY AS BEARS COACH

With that being said, I can’t rule out the Bears kicking the tires on other options. The NFL is full of surprises. However, I know that a starting left tackle option isn’t going to appear out of the blue. So while I’m willing to put Jones’ name in the starting lineup, I would do so while using a pencil — because pencils have erasers and this situation seems fluid. In the end, no matter who gets the call, they will have to play their way to keep the job. This left tackle competition is far from over, friends.

What’s new with Jaylon Johnson?

The latest on Bears Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson is that he will be taken off the non-football injury list ahead of the 3 p.m. CT Tuesday deadline. This is important because it makes him eligible to play in Week 1 against the Vikings. The next step for CB1 is to get on the practice field. This quote from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson (h/t Brad Biggs) feels telling:

“We’re doing as much as we can to make sure that conditioning is where it needs to be, but at the same time, there really is no substitute for putting on pads and playing the game at full speed. Each guy’s different, particularly guys that have had success in this league. They’re a little bit different than maybe a rookie that you don’t know as much about.

“He does get a little benefit of the doubt because he’s played this game at a high level. At the same time, I don’t think there’s any substitute for being able to be about there and go through the process. Training camp is a really good indication, not just for the team but for each player as you’re working through low volume, ramping on up over the course … just to make sure you’re ready to take on a 17-game season. Of course he’s missed that.”

It is clear that the Bears have a Week 1 target date for Jaylon Johnson’s return. What remains unclear is how ready he will be when the lights go on for Monday Night Football. We will continue to monitor this situation as it develops.

Extra points with Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson on the Bears running backs room, which features D’Andre Swift and Brittain Brown as the only players who are healthy right now: “There are some question marks on when all of these guys will be fully healthy again. That’s really what we’re talking about as we’re going through the roster right now.”

The Bears will carry three quarterbacks, with Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum backing up starter Caleb Williams.

BEN JOHNSON ON BEARS QB SITUATION: “WE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST ROOMS IN THE NFL”

Ben Johnson on slow starts this summer: “The slow starts, that’s not what we want to be about. I felt that in practice, at times, over the course of camp. We’re on a mission right now just to make sure that doesn’t become a constant recurring theme as we go into the season. And so, like anything, you bring it to their attention. We’ve got a bunch of pros and a bunch of prideful guys, and we’ll get this thing fixed.”

More Ben Johnson on the slow starts and accountability:

“It’s not Caleb, it’s everybody. It’s everybody. Coaches are included in all this. So, we’re not pointing fingers. The whole thing is we’ve gotta be focused, we have to be intentional. We like to talk about, if we get 70 plays in a game, those are 70 bullets for us to shoot off, and we need each one to count. We can’t be missing, we can’t be wasting. I think that’s the mantra we’ve been talking about as coaches, and the players are really taking to that. There are no breather plays in this league. Each thing is really important. The details are very important. I think it’s going to add up and we’ll be just fine.”
