Original sculptures created by Career Technical Education Center students will be on public display this September at the San Diego Central Library, thanks to a partnership between Arts Education Connection San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education’s Juvenile Court and Community Schools.

The exhibition, hosted at the Pauline Foster Teen Center on the second floor of the library, will run from September 4 to 30. An opening reception will be held Sept. 4 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.

The show marks the fourth year of the ArtWorks Fellowship program, an eight-week hands-on experience that blends art, education, and community engagement. Under the guidance of Teaching Artist Stacie Greene, CTEC high school students explored sculptural techniques ranging from subtractive and additive methods to assemblage and surface treatments. They also studied Native American pottery and the works of artists Louise Nevelson and Joseph Cornell. Over 32 hours of studio practice, students developed their own sculptural vocabulary and created capstone projects that showcase their growth and creativity.

Visitors to the reception will have the chance to meet the student artists and Greene to learn more about the inspiration and process behind the works. The program reflects AECSD’s long-standing mission to connect young people to their cultural roots and creative potential. Since 1963, AECSD has provided arts education across San Diego through workshops, residencies, and professional learning opportunities, working to ensure that students, families, and communities thrive through the arts.

The exhibition also highlights the role of JCCS, which provides accredited education to school-age youth facing challenges such as incarceration, foster care, homelessness, or chronic truancy. Operated by the San Diego County Office of Education, JCCS supports these students with academic and enrichment opportunities—including programs like ArtWorks—that open pathways to creative and professional futures, according to a news release.
