GENESEO, N.Y. – The Village of Geneseo is considering allowing a marijuana dispensary to open, which would be one of the first in Livingston County and the first in the college town. A public hearing was held on Monday night with about 40 people in attendance.
Thirteen attendees voiced their support for the dispensary, while eight were against it.
Village Mayor Chris Ivers explained the village’s initial decision to opt out when the original law was introduced. “So the Village of Geneseo opted out when the original law came out because no one knew what they were getting into,” Ivers said. “As time moved on and New York State has developed some of its laws, we think it’s a good time to revisit and see if the village is ready to move forward.”
Ivers says the potential dispensary would be built in Mixed Use Zone 2, which runs along Route 20A from Temple Hill St. to Volunteer Rd.
But some are not looking forward to the potential new business.
“I just think we’re doing it for the wrong reasons,” said Travis Andrews, one of the opponents. “You know, we always talk about the revenue sharing part of it, and, the state just doesn’t revenue share for a village this size.”
Andrews also raised concerns about the costs associated with increased police and EMS services.
Justin Merkel, a local cannabis grower and future dispensary owner in Avon, supported the proposal, emphasizing the potential benefits. “At the end of the day, I think that we’re all adults. It’s regulated, it’s legal,” Merkel said. “And then the benefits of the actual tax incentives that [the NYS Office of Cannabis Management] gives back to the communities really can help.”
“For a municipality our size with the employees and razor-thin budgets that we have, any revenue stream is good for us,” Ivers said.
The village’s next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8. No word on when the decision will officially be made.
