BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Brockport Blue Devils are gearing up for the upcoming high school football season with renewed determination after a unique season last year. The team finished with a 6-4 record, including a first-round upset over state-ranked East.
“We’re very excited. And, you know, coming off the season we had last year got a lot of unfinished business with the seniors we had,” senior Ayden Matthews said.
Despite their success, the Blue Devils are not satisfied with just a first-round win.
“Well, every year you have that moment of finality. You know, you say to your guys, if you don’t win it because only one team wins it. So everybody gets that bitter taste. And you say, remember that feeling,” head coach Paul Carella said.
The team made up for any shortcomings last year with energy, toughness, and chemistry.
“It’s not about the skill. It’s about who wants it,” senior Ryan Miller said.
Matthews described Coach Carella as a father figure, saying, “You know he’s always there for us. You know he might yell at you, but it’s all love at the end of the day. And he wants us to be the best we can. And he knows the potential we have.”
Carella has been with this group for a long time, having taught them in middle school.
“You take what he says. You listen to it, right? You don’t take it as like, oh, whatever. Like coach said this, he knows what he’s talking about. He’s been there,” Miller said.
Carella expressed his hopes for the team, saying, “These guys they want to hold up a trophy. They want to create that legacy. And just we always talk about finish strong finish strong.”
The Blue Devils will kick off their season on the road against Churchville-Chili on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
