The Weld RE-5J School District continues to incorporate ways for Roosevelt High School’s construction pathway students to “build up” their work-based learning skills.

This includes a new hands-on project for students: building and selling 8-by-8-foot garden sheds.

Community members can place an order for a custom-built, high-quality garden shed, which costs $1,800, according to a social media post by Weld RE-5J Career and Technical Education program. Customers can get a durable and functional shed for their backyard storage while supporting students who need construction experience.

To place an order for a shed, message the Weld RE-5J CTE on Facebook by going to facebook.com/CTE5J.

BUILT NoCo, a nonprofit that provides construction-focused vocational education across northern Colorado, recently hosted an event to foster connections between regional construction companies and high school students in college and career pathways and work-based learning programs.

The event showcased the value of this partnership, which supports local industry needs while preparing the future workforce for careers in construction, according to a news release from Rebecca Albert Vollrath, Weld RE-5J School District’s director of career and innovation.

Mike Hensley, career navigator for Northern Colorado Careers in Construction, emphasized the event’s significance for both employers and young workers.

“Events like these give students real insight into the construction industry while showing companies the value of investing in future talent,” Hensley said in the release. “By working together, we’re not only preparing students for meaningful careers but also helping strengthen the future of our local workforce.”

Attendees learned about Xello, a career exploration platform for high school students, presented by representatives from the NoCo K12 Work-based Learning Collaborative, according to the release. The businesses gained guidance on onboarding into the system and connecting with students interested in construction and related fields.

A panel discussion at the event included industry mentors Zach Karre of A+ Heating and Air, Jackson Mitchell of Adolfson & Peterson Construction and Malone Snyder of Encore Electric, who spoke to the importance of businesses investing in student talent. Roosevelt High School students Leah Tiller, a junior in the construction pathway, and senior Skyler Woolever, an intern with Adolfson & Peterson Construction, also joined the panel.

“Together, students and professionals showcased the real-world benefits of Work-Based Learning — bridging classroom knowledge with career readiness while fostering strong partnerships between schools and businesses,” the release said.

The two student panelists provided insight into how work-based learning has shaped their “career interests and personal skills,” according to the release.

The event, made possible by a collaboration between BUILT NoCo, Poudre School District, Thompson Valley School District and Weld RE-5J’s Roosevelt High School, showcased a regional commitment to career readiness.
