Firefighting Teams Extinguish Wildfires in Deir Shmail, Hama Countryside – Syria ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Firefighting and Civil Defense teams on Monday, August 25, fully extinguished the wildfires that had reignited in the forests of Deir Shamil(in western Hama countryside), after burning agricultural lands and wooded areas.

The fires initially broke out on August 20, raising fears they could spread toward nearby churches and the Abu Qubais valley, though no civilian or rescue team injuries were reported.

Safwan al-Mudhhi, Director of Agriculture in Hama, told Enab Baladi that the Deir Shamil blaze has been fully contained in most areas and entered the cooling phase, with fire lines secured near homes to protect residents.

Firefighting teams from the Agriculture Directorate and Civil Defense, along with local volunteers, continue cooling operations in Wadi al-Fawar to prevent any flare-ups, according to al-Mudhhi.

He added that flames had reignited in the area of the churches (Sanawbara point), where teams and community members are working intensively to contain them.

In early August, simultaneous wildfires spread across Hama and Latakia countryside for more than ten days.

On August 17, Raed al-Saleh, Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management in the Syrian government, announced via X that all blazes in western Hama forests had been extinguished and cooled, though monitoring would continue to ensure they did not flare up again.

The fires had extended to Shahtah in the al-Ghab Plain, as well as to rural Jableh in Latakia province, where efforts were hindered by remnants of war munitions, al-Saleh told the state-run SANA agency.

Syrian Defense Ministry helicopters from al-Mezzeh Air Base in Damascus assisted in fire suppression efforts in Hama’s countryside.

25 Wildfires This Season

Anas Barhoum, Director of Forestry in the al-Ghab Plain, previously told Enab Baladi that 25 wildfires have been recorded since the beginning of the season.

He noted that the recent fires consumed 4,000 hectares, in addition to 1,500 hectares lost in earlier blazes.

Among the areas damaged were 500 dunams of privately-owned orchards, as well as a pine forest in Abu Qubais (northwest of Hama), along with oak and terebinth trees.

Barhoum said no human casualties were reported. The causes of the fires ranged from arson to negligence, while some remained unknown.

Drought, lack of rainfall, and dry vegetation accelerated the spread of the fires, he added, while winds expanded the burned area.

In mid-July, the Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management announced that wildfires in Latakia province had been fully contained after 12 consecutive days of work.

At that time, he considered the emergency response phase concluded, marking the start of equally important efforts to protect remaining forests and rehabilitate damaged areas.

Those fires had destroyed over 14,000 hectares, according to the Ministry of Agriculture on August 4.
