The exercise involved students working to overcome communication barriers with deaf community members who roleplayed as healthcare providers and staff. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into the frustrations deaf individuals encounter when trying to communicate in medical settings.
“I saw how frustrating it would be if either you’re speaking a different language, sign language, anything like that,” said Franklin Hsu, a first-year medical student. “If you’re not able to understand each other, it’s really difficult to communicate or just be present in whatever they’re trying to say to you.”
Participation in the Deaf Strong Hospital program is a graduation requirement for all students attending the University of Rochester Medical Center.
