Residents in a northern suburb have encountered a foul smell in recent days, with park district officials attributing the odor to a fish kill event.

While the cause of the fish kills hasn’t been determined, heavy rain events, such as the one that occurred Monday, can bring in large amounts of material and “can be oxygen-consuming, crashing the dissolved oxygen,” according to the park district.
