HILTON, N.Y. – RTS announced it is eliminating the only bus route in the village of Hilton due to cost concerns. The decision to cut Route 92, which runs from the Eastman Avenue Connection Hub to the Clarkson Highway Department stop, was made without consulting the village, officials said.

Village Trustee Andrew Fowler expressed concerns about the lack of communication from RTS.

“They apologized… they left the village of Hilton out of all communication… the a village of about 6,000 that falls right on this bus route… in the dark completely,” Fowler said.

RTS reported that the route had a daily ridership of only five to six people and costs $200,000 annually to operate. Fowler believes that had the village been involved, alternative solutions could have been explored.

“Yes ridership was low, but sparking this conversation, having an educational campaign, looking at other solutions other than straight up termination would’ve been more favorable,” Fowler said.

Fowler suggested that the route’s length and ease of access might have contributed to the low ridership. “They made it more difficult having to take, transfer at the transfer station, so maybe we could’ve reimagined the bus route,” he said.

RTS on-demand services do not currently operate in Hilton. Fowler discussed the possibility of expanding these services, but RTS said there are no plans to do so.

The changes to Route 92 will take effect on Sept. 1. Residents are planning a write-in campaign to oppose the route’s elimination, Fowler said.
