‘It definitely feels like it to everybody’: Rochester sees uptick in multiple alarm fires this summer ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Fire Department is investigating a string of fires that have occurred in the city during the month of August. The latest fire happened on Sherman Street just a couple of hours ago, catching the attention of News10NBC as we’ve been counting the number of fires happening in the city.

“It definitely feels like it to everybody,” said Executive Deputy Chief Paul Kucewicz of the Rochester Fire Department. “I can’t confirm the amount of multiple alarm fires, that’s what we’re speaking about right now. But this summer it seems we’ve had quite a few fires and quite a few multiple alarm fires.”

Here is the list of larger fires we covered in Rochester for August:

Aug. 1 – Tent City fire on Lyell AvenueAug. 6 – Fires on Greenwood Street and Wadsworth StreetAug. 10 – Fire on Cottage StreetAug. 12 – Fire at Dewey Avenue townhouse and West AvenueAug. 15 – Fire on Petrel StreetAug. 20 – Multiple alarm fire on Garson AvenueAug. 21 – Fire on Cottage StreetAug. 22 – Car garage fire on Sherman Street

Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “What gets our attention when we hear it are the multiple alarm fires. But sometimes that’s environmental.”

Exec. Dep. Chief Paul Kucewicz: “Yes.”

Berkeley Brean: “It’s not necessarily the size of the fire. It may be the environment including the temperature.”

“So in situations like that, our firefighters won’t be able to work effectively in those environments for as long as they normally can,” said Kucewicz. “So in anticipation of that, our chiefs on scene may call a multiple alarm to stage manpower to allow time for rehab and rehydration.”

The fire department called multiple alarms to a fire on West Avenue, not because of the size but because of how hot it was.

News10NBC’s Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean started out on Cottage Street, which was one of the first fires in the month of August. The damage spread to the house next door and everything left in the space in between. One of the things the fire department is seeing is that there is so much synthetic material inside these homes that the fires are burning faster and hotter.

The fire department is compiling data for August. In July, there were 52 fires which is up from 49 the year before.
