Running back Brian Robinson is reportedly being traded to the Chicago Bears’ Week 17 opponent.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter had the first scoop on the Washington Commanders sending the team’s top running back from the last few seasons to San Francisco in a trade:

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 22, 2025The NFL trade window that comes between the end of the preseason and the start of the regular season is wide open. Once it becomes officially official, the Brian Robinson trade will count as just the latest move in a wave of trades that have already gone down around the league.
Brian Robinson Trade: Commanders, 49ers, Bears Impact
Brian Robinson was the Washington Commanders’ primary starter at running back for each of the past three seasons. And while he hasn’t put together a 1,000-yard rushing season yet, Robinson is coming off a season in which he set career bests in rushing yards (799), rushing touchdowns (8), and yards per carry (4.3) while playing in 14 games. But as he entered his final year with the team, perhaps the front office is ready to move on a year early. Kudos to the 49ers for jumping the market and improving their team at the cost of a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Seeing this trade take place reminds me of how even small trades not directly involving the Bears can still impact our football world. Firstly, both the 49ers and the Commanders are on Chicago’s list of scheduled opponents in 2025. The Niners are getting better in the backfield, adding depth to a position that didn’t have it in the early going of the summer — and doing so by bringing in a quality rusher with ample starting experience. Out in Washington, the Commanders clear up some salary cap space and clear a path for other backs who might be better long-term options for that offense.
As for the Bears, this trade does a few things. At the top, it takes a potential trade option off the table. It also sets the market for a trade of a running back at a 2026 sixth-round pick. That isn’t a prohibitive cost. Should the team want to make a trade to acquire someone who can help the backfield, it shouldn’t be problematic. Also, seeing this trade pop up in the morning makes what Ian Wheeler, Brittain Brown, and Royce Freeman do tonight that much more important. Tonight’s preseaosn game against the Chiefs might as well be an audition for those backs.
In the end, I can’t stop thinking about how many more trades are on the horizon as front offices around the NFL try to trim their rosters to 53 players. Trading players and getting future draft capital is better than cutting them and getting nothing in return. Will the Bears be in on the action? Stay tuned.
