The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced revised fixtures for the Women’s Cricket World Cup that is scheduled to commence from September 30 onwards. The tournament opener between India women and Sri Lanka women has been moved from M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru to Barsapara stadium in Guwahati while Navi Mumbai has replaced Bengaluru as venue for the tournament. This comes after the Karnataka government denied permission to host the WC matches in the aftermath of the Bengaluru stampede.
Navi Mumbai replaces Bengaluru as venue for Women’s WC
As per the ICC’s press release, the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai will host up to five matches, including three league stage games, a semi-final and perhaps even the final. Since Pakistan women will play all their games at a neutral venue (Colombo, Sri Lanka), the final could be held in Navi Mumbai or Colombo depending on results while the first semi-final will be held either in Guwahati or Navi Mumbai. INDW vs SLW, ENGW vs SAW, INDW vs BANW and the semi-final were the clashes that were scheduled to be held in Bengaluru.
“While unforeseen circumstances required us to adjust the schedule and replace a venue, we are pleased to now have a line-up of five world-class venues that will showcase the very best of the women’s game,” ICC chairman Jay Shah said.
Earlier, it was reported that Thiruvananthapuram will replace Bengaluru as a venue. However, that is not the case as Navi Mumbai has pipped the Kerala city to host the WC matches.
