President Donald Trump went to a U.S. Park Police facility Thursday evening to thank National Guard members and law enforcement officers for patrolling Washington, D.C., since the president declared a “crime emergency” in the city earlier this month.
The president addressed hundreds of troops and officers outside a Park Police facility in the Anacostia neighborhood shortly after 5:30 p.m., thanking them for their contributions to the Trump administration’s effort to clean up the city and make it safer.
“We’ve had some incredible results, that results have come out,” Trump said. “And it’s like a different place; it’s like a different city. It’s the capital. It’s going to be the best in the world.”
Standing outside the Park Police facility as Trump arrived were approximately 300 men and women with various agencies, including DEA, ATF, US Marshals, National Guard and the FBI, the Associated Press reported. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum were also on hand.
Trump also talked about efforts to quickly reduce crime as well as remove graffiti, fix medians and repair roads.
“We’re going back to Congress for some money and we’re going to redo a lot of the pavement, the medians,” he said. “The graffiti is going to come down real fast.”
Trump said he’ll be redoing parks in the city with new grass and new sprinkler systems, and replacing signage throughout the capital.
He said he knows a lot about grass because he owns a lot of golf courses.
“We have a life and grass has a life, and the grass here died about 40 years ago,” Trump said. “Let’s say, at the end of a year, this place will be maxed out in terms of beauty.”
Trump called in to a radio show hosted by Newsmax host Todd Starnes Thursday morning and spoke about his plans.
“I’m gonna be going out tonight I think with the police and with the military, of course. So, we’re gonna do a job. The National Guard is great. They’ve done a fantastic job,” he said.
Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared burgers with soldiers at Union Station on Wednesday.
“You guys are doing a hell of a job,” Vance told the troops at a Shake Shack as protest chants echoed.
The president’s federalization of D.C. 10 days earlier has rippled through the city, with Guard troops on streets, immigration detentions caught on camera and fear that people who need free health services will skip an event to avoid federal officials.

In Maryland, Gov. Wes Moore invited Trump to visit and take a public safety walk with him in Baltimore.
“Last week, you responded to my concerns about the deployment of National Guard personnel for municipal policing in Washington, D.C., by insulting me personally from the Oval Office,” he wrote in a letter Thursday. “So I wanted to write in order to clarify the root of my frustration and extend an invitation for you to visit Maryland, where we can discuss strategies for effective public safety policy.”
“Whatever date works best for you!” Moore said on X. “We hope you’ll come to see how we’ve built strong local partnerships and used data-backed solutions to deliver staggering drops in violent crime.”
