RipFest diver Grant Cates will join the SMU Mustangs this fall as a member of the men’s class of 2029.
Cates was ranked as our fifth-best diving recruit in SwimSwam’s ranking of the top male diving recruits in the high school class of 2025 class back in October.
The Swayzee, IN, native advanced to the finals of the USA Diving Junior National Championships on 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform, highlighted by a third-place finish on platform. He also earned a bronze medal in men’s synchronized platform at the 2025 USA Diving National Championships.
Back in March, Cates broke the long-standing IHSAA 1-meter record with a score of 655.95 points. The Oak Hill graduate topped the previous mark held by Phillip Jones in 2001 of 623.90

Best Scores (11 Dives):
1-meter: 655.95 3-meter: 542.60 10-meter Platform: 677.45The Mustangs finished 11th out of 15 teams last season at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Mustang diver Luke Stitz finished runner-up on 3-meter, just under a point and a half behind Max Fowler of Georgia Tech at the 2025 ACC Championships. Additionally, Stitz took bronze in the 1-meter, with his finishing score of 375.30. Stitz went on to finish 7th in the 1-meter and 17th in the 3-meter at NCAAs last season for the Mustangs.
Cates joins Aidan Arie, Thad Austin, George Gonzalez, Andy Baklanov, Trey Clervi, Evan Boratto, Zach Bower, Aubrey Jaya, and Francis Brennan in the Mustangs class of 2029.
