New York State aims to reduce road salt usage with improved tactics and liquid brine ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State is trying to use less road salt during the 2025-26 snow and ice season.

The State Department of Transportation has been using a number of tactics for several years now, including better training for snowplow drivers, and the use of liquid salt brine instead of granular road salt.

The use of that brine will be expanding this upcoming snow and ice on various state roads, but not yet to the Finger Lakes region.

The DOT says historically, the seven-year statewide average application rate for road salt was 194 pounds per lane-mile. Last year, the DOT says the number went down to 172 pounds.
