CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A man who served both as a Mecklenburg County court clerk and a longtime youth volleyball coach is now facing serious charges in a child exploitation case under investigation by local and federal authorities.
Kent Dale Matzinger, 42, has been charged with two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Court documents reveal the charges are the result of a multi-state investigation that began in Texas and led authorities to Charlotte.
Matzinger worked with the Clerk of Superior Court until August 2025. He also spent 16 years as a part-time volleyball coach with the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club.

He reportedly admitted to communicating on social media with someone he knew as "Zianna." Detectives said Matzinger claimed he began to suspect the situation was a scam in 2023 and eventually cut off contact.
A federal search warrant was executed at his Charlotte home in January. While electronic devices were seized, authorities said no illegal images have been recovered from the devices to date. However, investigators have linked Matzinger to an online account that allegedly received inappropriate content from someone posing as a minor.
He was released on a $50,000 secured bond, which was posted on August 19. This case is due back in court in early September.
Chester County Sheriff partners with ICE for immigration enforcementCarolina Juniors Volleyball confirmed Matzinger's role with the club in a statement to Queen City News:
“Kent was a part-time volleyball coach for the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club for the past 16 years. He resigned last Tuesday by sending us an email with no explanation. We have never had any issues with Kent the entire time he has worked for the club, and we have never received any complaints about him personally or as a coach. The news about his recent arrest and charges are a shock to all of us at CJV.”
This case remains under investigation.
