We continue our fall sports preview with a soccer team, the best in New York State from a season ago, in the Fairport Red Raiders.
How good to winning a state championship feel this year?
“It was a great feeling,” said Justin Burton.
“I mean, just felt amazing,” said Sean Griffin.
“Once I saw the ball go into the net, it was just celebration, it was joy,” said Alex Grejda.
The first state title in program history, a dream season for the Red Raiders.
“It was more than I could have ever imagined,” said head coach Bill Teasdale. “Our goal every year, is try to win the league, try to win sectionals. States was more of a dream.”
But these guys know that last year was last year and of course, this year is this year. With 13 returners, the Red Raiders know that there’s a bit of a bullseye on their back as they head into game one with a 20-game unbeaten streak.
“Every game for us is a big game,” Teasdale said. “Because everybody is looking to give us their best game. But that makes it all the more exciting. Having that challenge, it makes us just work that much harder.”
An advantage Fairport may have on top of their experience is this team is pretty balanced. Last year, scoring 56 goals and allowing just 22.
“Everyone was willing to do what they had to do,” Grejda said. “From defense to midfield to offense, we’re all working together like one unit.”
A habit that begins right here in August. So this team can be triumphant come November.
“We work as a team and we just never give up. And we persevere through everything,” Griffin said. “There’s nothing that our team can’t do.”
A team that knows what it takes to win but knows they’re back to zero and zero, just like everyone else out there.
“We had a really good season last year, but I’m not going to let it get to us,” Burton said. “Just do our thing. Put balls in the back of the net and the defense will stop them from going in.”
The Red Raiders’ title defense will begin at home on Friday, August 29th, against Webster Schroeder.
