A 17-year-old boy who went swimming with a group of friends after dark Wednesday at Lighthouse Beach in suburban Evanston died after being pulled from the water in “extremely rough conditions,” with waves as high as five feet tall and a swim warning in effect.
The teen’s death comes as the National Weather Service issued a “high swim risk” for Lake Michigan beaches through Thursday afternoon, with life-threatening currents, especially for inexperienced swimmers.
“If you have plans to head to the beach, expect dangerous swimming conditions, with guarded beaches closed or restricted,” the NWS warned.
About 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Evanston Fire Department was dispatched to Lighthouse Beach for reports of 17-year-old missing in the water along the north side of the beach’s break wall, a press release said.
“We got a call from a group of adolescence that were swimming at Lighthouse Beach,” Matt Smith, Evanston Fire Department Division Chief of Special Operations said. “They noticed one of their friends did not resurface.”
The beach was closed with a red flag warning at the time, Smith said, with “extremely rough conditions” on the water.
Evanston water rescue teams were launched, along with drones, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and teams from neighboring suburbs Wilmette and Winnetka. Teams initially began searching on the north side of the break wall, but had to shift due to “poor water conditions,” the release added.
Video and photos from the scene show a large response from local fire departments, with high waves hitting the shore.
“The wave conditions were pretty severe,” Battalion Chief Tim Migon said, describing the waves as between three and five feet. “I only had two members in the water, and they were getting pushed around pretty good.”
About 9:27 p.m., the victim was located about 30 yards off the break wall, the release said. CPR and advanced life support were given on the beach, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, but his condition was not provided.
Early Thursday morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed the teen was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday.
“No lights, no lifeguards on duty, no one could see anything,” Migon said, of the dangerous swimming conditions. “The kids were out there, no one had a buddy with them.”
The Evanston Fire Department urges all residents and visitors to heed beach flag warnings and safety messaging for their protection, the release said.
