Recommendations include capping the number of permits for short-term rentals and the distance between them. The current proposal is 500 feet but some owners say this discriminates against lakefront property owners who want to rent out their homes. However, neighbors have mixed opinions.
“You can’t have six on one street. That’s too much. So really, please, please, please do not tweak that 500 feet unless it’s making it larger,” Irondequoit resident Tammy Halldow said.
Jennifer Suba, a short-term rental owner, had a different perspective.
“What started as a small way to share the beauty of joy of Irondequoit has become my livelihood and how I plan to retire,” Suba said. “Hosting doesn’t just support me, it supports our community. It provides steady work for cleaners, snow crew and contractors. Guests spend money in our restaurants, shops and attractions.”
The town has not adopted any regulations yet. The board voted to keep the public hearing period open until the next town board meeting on Sept. 16.
