Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III seems to have latched onto his head coach’s “no block, no rock” mantra.
Earlier in the offseason, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson made it clear that pass catchers wouldn’t get the ball if they weren’t getting their nose dirty in the run blocking game. It was easy to assume that sentiment was aimed at a veteran receiver such as DJ Moore, but it sure seems like one of the team’s top rookies got the memo and has made it his goal to put his blocking prowess on tape. And, frankly, I am 100 percent here for it.
The Bears’ social media team highlighted Luther Burden’s blocking excellence from Sunday’s preseason win against the Buffalo Bills with a video post on Twitter/X. So in case you missed these blocks live on Sunday (or you really like watching wideouts block), they’ve got you covered:

The video clip above is just 41 seconds long, but I could watch it all day. If you wanted to teach wide receivers how to properly block, you would show them this video clip. It isn’t just the blocking, mind you. But it is also how Burden lines up, shifts, positions himself to deliver the block, and executes it with gusto. Making splash plays is one way to make a name for yourself as a rookie. But if you aren’t getting the rock, the next best way is to show your teammates and coaches that you are fully engaged in all facets of the game.
Luther Burden III is standing out for his blocking
When the Chicago Bears selected Luther Burden III in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, I was excited about his potential in the new-look offense. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson had a knack for scheming talented receivers to get open and make big plays. So, naturally, I was geeked up about the addition. However, as Patrick pointed out in a post during training camp, there were questions about Burden’s effort, committment, and desire heading into draft weekend. But to this point, those concerns seem unfounded based on Burden’s preseasomn performance.
I try not to take away too much from preseason games. But effort, intensity, and football IQ are three things that a player can show off in exhibition games that can show up when the games matter in the standings. If Luther Burden III can continue blocking with authority and making smart plays with the snaps he is given, then I can see him using that as something that springboards the rookie wideout to a larger chunk of the target share. To be clear, it won’t be easy. But everyone has to start somewhere. And for Burden, his start might entail the humble beginnings of a blocking wide receiver.
After seeing what Luther Burden did against SEC defenses while at Missouri, it was easy to dream about what he could do in the pros. There is still time for Burden to show off what he can do with his hands by catching passes, and I look forward to those moments whenever they come. But for now, I am getting joy out of watching him make his mark on the game with his blocking prowess. What a pleasant surprise this has turned out to be. I hope it carries over into the regular season.
