The Chicago Bears starters will square off against the starters of the defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs in Friday’s preseason finale.
How long the starters will play is unknown at this time. But in an interview with Kay Adams on the “Up and Adams Show” on Tuesday, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson let it be known that his starters will take the field at Arrowhead Stadium as both teams wrap up the exhibition slate of games.
“We’ll go ahead and play. We’ll see how long it is,” Johnson said. “We’re going to get through a couple of days of practice, and we’ll determine for how long. But we need to go through this.”

Even if the Bears limit their starters to just a few series, I would say that simulating preparation for a road game in a hostile environment against a daunting foe with a championship pedigree would be a good use of the team’s time this week. If that is how Chicago’s coaching staff chooses to go about using this week of preparation, then I would say that I am on board with the decision. Just don’t get any of your projected key contributors nicked up or seriously injured in a tune-up that many would consider to be meaningless.
Ben Johnson telling Kay Adams that he plans on playing his starters in Friday’s Bears-Chiefs preseason game comes just one day after Kansas City Head Coach Andy Reid told reporters that he was putting his regulars in the starting lineup. Given what Johnson said earlier in the preseason about working with head coaches like Mike McDaniel (Dolphins) and Sean McDermott (Bills) to hash out practice and preseason game plans, it would not surprise me if he and Reid got on the phone and ironed out how they wanted to handle the preseason finale.
I was already preparing myself to lock in for the Preseason Week 3 showdown against the Chiefs. That the Bears are playing their starters in this game gets me a little more geeked up. And I imagine that football fans in Chicago and Kansas City will be more inclined to tune in for a preseason game that features their starters. That leaves me with only one question left unanswered — will these Bears have a better showing in front of Taylor Swift than the 2023 team? It’s hard to imagine it being worse than this lousy effort.
