Heading into the final week of the preseason, position battles are reaching their conclusion around the league. On Monday, the Browns gave Joe Flacco their starting quarterback job. Today, the Colts did the same with Daniel Jones, giving him the nod over Anthony Richardson.
The Colts named Daniel Jones their starting quarterback
Daniel Jones will be under center for the Indianapolis Colts when they take on the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. According to Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen, Jones will also be the starter well beyond that game.
“He’s the starting quarterback for the season,” Steichen said Tuesday, via the team’s official website. “I don’t want to have a short leash on that.”
Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks Anthony Richardson Sr. (5), Daniel Jones (17), and Riley Leonard (15) prepare for drills Monday, July 28, 2025, during training camp held at Grand Park in Westfield.Still, the Colts remain adamant they’re not giving up on third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, whom Steichen advocated for the team to select fourth overall in 2023 when he took over as the head coach in Indianapolis. Since being selected in 2023, Richardson has battled with injuries and inconsistency. And for what it’s worth, Jones can relate. Jones battled inconsistency since being drafted in the first round by the New York Giants in 2019. He led the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, but was released by New York in November 2024 after a 2-8 start for the Giants. From there, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings, worked with Head Coach Kevin O’Connell and behind starter Sam Darnold before signing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts this past spring.
While Jones is the Week 1 starter, and as Steichen said, doesn’t have a short leash, his one-year deal makes him anything but the long-term answer in Indy. The Colts still have the option to pivot to Richardson, and if all else fails, they’ll likely be hitting the reset button on the position again during the offseason.
Dolphins expected to sign Matthew Judon
The Miami Dolphins are adding another pass rusher to the mix, signing veteran Matthew Judon to a deal after a visit on Monday. Judon spent the 2024 season in Atlanta after signing a one-year deal in late August last year, and recorded only 5.5 sacks in 15 games with the Falcons.
Since suffering a biceps injury with New England in 2023, Judon has only registered 9.5 sacks in 21 games over the past two seasons with the Patriots and Falcons. Still, Judon brings a veteran presence to a Miami group that can use all the depth it can get, with injuries in the pass rush group derailing it in previous seasons.
© Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY SportsWhile the team hasn’t announced the signing, Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver said what Judon brings to their group on Tuesday.
“Everything he’s shown on film, we look for in our edges,” Weaver said. “He’s a great compliment to all of the guys that we have.”
Commanders’ Jacory Croskey-Merritt Impresses in Brian Robinson’s absence on Monday
On Monday night, Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. was not present for the team’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals as the team explores trade options for the 2022 third-round pick. But rookie seventh-rounder Jacory Croskey-Merritt was, and he looked impressive.
Croskey-Merritt—who we learned on Monday prefers to go by “Bill” rushed for 46 yards against Cincinnati, including a 27-yard touchdown. Croskey-Merritt has had a solid camp for the Commanders, contributing to the team’s exploration of a trade for Robinson.
Croskey-Merritt—who rushed for 1,190 yards and 17 touchdowns at New Mexico in 2023 before transferring to Arizona last season, where injuries limited him to one game—will be one of the likely running backs on the Commanders’ opening day 53-man roster, joined by Austin Ekeler, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and Jeremy McNichols, and of course, Brian Robinson Jr., if he’s not traded by then.
