“Airport planning is not just about the next year – it’s about the next generation,” Michael McMurray, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation, said.

“Passengers will arrive at a large domed multi-tiered space with an oculus,” said Scott Duncan, a partner with the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. “An oculus is a skylight in a circular form that directs daylight into the building and helps orient travelers the moment they arrive.”
The city said about 4,000 construction jobs will be created with the project – all while 120 planes an hour use the airfield and construction site.
