ROCHESTER, N.Y. – About 150 teachers in the Rochester City School District have not been paid for their summer work. The Rochester Teacher Association (RTA) proposed a temporary solution yesterday.
RTA President Adam Urbanski sent an email to teachers offering an emergency loan option. Teachers can visit an Advantage Federal Credit Union office to take out an interest-free loan of up to $2,000 for one year.
“We are doing emergency, interest-free loan, not instead of fixing the problem, but in addition to fixing the problem,” Urbanski said. He emphasized that teachers in dire financial situations can use this opportunity while the union works on a permanent solution.
The payroll issues began over the summer when the district switched to new data software. Urbanski said the district is still addressing problems caused by the transition. He suggested returning to the old software for payroll while continuing the transition to the new system.
The union plans to meet with the district superintendent Wednesday to finalize plans for teachers without pay. School starts in about three weeks, with the first payday on Sept. 5. Urbanski wants a plan in place before then.
