A large fire struck the home of 2012 Olympian Claire Donahue White and her husband, Jeremy White, over the weekend. Their apartment, as well as 11 other units in Nashville’s Bellevue apartment complex, were impacted by the fires.

The fire, which began as an appliance fire in one of the apartments, broke out at around 11 A.M. Saturday, August 16. It spread across 12 apartments in the complex, including that of Claire and Jeremy White, before being extinguished shortly after 2 P.M. None of the residents reported any injuries, though a first responder was transported from the scene for reasons unrelated to the fire.

Donahue and White met as student-athletes at Western Kentucky University in 2010, and while White was on the football team, he became friends with many of Claire’s teammates. She and White stayed in touch even after her graduation in 2011. In 2012, Donahue had the most defining moment of her swimming career, when she qualified for Team USA in the 100 butterfly at the London Olympics, and would go on to win gold for her contribution in the 4×100 medley relay.

Even through all the excitement, Donahue and White remained friends, and after four years of knowing each other, the two first started dating. Six years later, the couple got married on August 22, 2020, and since then, the Whites have moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Claire is a coach for Ensworth Aquatics. She also spent several years coaching for the TAC Titans in North Carolina, where she mentored fellow Olympian Claire Curzan, among others.

The Ensworth Aquatics community has rallied around Claire and Jeremy in this difficult time. Fellow Ensworth coach Christian Bahr has set up a Gofundme campaign to help the couple restart after losing their home and belongings in the fire. Over 100 members of the community have already helped to raise $20,000 for the Whites.

“Claire has given so much of herself to her athletes, colleagues, and friends,” Bahr shares in the Gofundme. “Let’s rally together to support Claire and Jeremy as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.”
